I have always been fascinated by the fact that all living systems are based on precisely orchestrated chemical reactions. At the same time, it is extremely difficult to follow and understand those reactions in the spatial and temporal resolution needed. I therefore decided to develop tools and methods to understand better the chemical processes that underlay life. The sensors I develop help me understand the chemical environment we live in and the processes that govern it.
I am leading the optical sensor development and aim to establish this as a core competence within the sensor laboratory. My interest and research goes from the synthesis of an indicator molecule to the final application. I also try to combine optical and electrochemical sensing as much as possible to get the most precise measurements possible.
For me it is the most fun to have an idea to quickly try it. Going to the lab putting things together and trying it out. The excitement where you wait for the first results is just the best for me. Even if things do not work as planned this is still fun.…and if things work as thought then it is even better.
In the sensor laboratory, we develop very valuable tools for society. The sensors we work on can really help us to better understand the chemistry in our environment and use this information to change it. This has implications in many areas including of course (waste)water treatment, safety and production. Despite our research having many applications, science itself has a big value for society. We need clever and forward thinking people to help us secure a good future. University is the place where the most up-to-date knowledge is taught and where we push the borders of what we know.
